I can’t help but cringe the moment I see the words “Based on a true story,” but something about Lion makes it completely separate and so much better than any movie of that type, including fellow Oscar contender Hidden Figures, and is without a doubt my lead contender and favorite for this year. Dev Patel and Sunny Pawar (who I feel was unfairly snubbed) give worthy and beautiful performances as people lost in two totally different yet equal ways. Garth Davis’ great use of space, of sound and quiet, of all the tools of the trade in filmmaking gives us an experience that is truly moving and beautiful, without resorting to forced arm twisting to the heart.
